Alster Cape Town Project

Help South Africa's Children In Need

With movement and fun, we tackle every hockey training session in the Western Cape Area. In order to create a safe and welcoming place for our children, we are reliant on your donations.
The Alster Cape Town Hockey Project
We are proud to partner with Western Province Hockey Union and Villa Viva, part of the Viva con Agua family to form the Alster Cape Town Hockey Project. Since 2022 our volunteers are active in the Cape town region to bring hockey into the communities. The overall initiative started when Delf Ness from Club an der Alster Hamburg and the Football Foundation as a part of the Grootbos Foundation came together to set up a hockey project in Gansbaai, South Africa, in 2009 as the Alster Grootbos Hockey Project.

Our Work In South Africa

Unite South Africa´s children through sports and enhance their education, that is our aim – since 2009.

Hockey Training

Show kids how to play hockey, improve their skills on the pitch and organise tournaments. It’s all about fun and overall personal development.

Material Donations

We organise an annual fundraiser event held in Hamburg in November. We are always looking for prizes for our raffle.

Financial Support

In order to pay our local hockey coach as well as finance equipment and transportation to games and tournaments, we need your monetary donations.

School Programs

Play, sing and dance with the kids at several local schools in the mornings. Physical Education which is inline with the schools curriculum are at the forefront of these sessions.

Hockey in South Africa.

Hockey projects like this are key to inspiring the next generation – the overall aim of the International Hockey Federation’s Hockey Revolution.

A Vision turns into Reality.

Upon visiting Grootbos, former German Bundesliga player, Delf Ness (Der Club an der Alster, Hamburg) was inspired to launch the Alster Grootbos Hockey Project, bringing the sport to Gansbaai for the first time.

Hockey is played by both girls and boys, promotes teamwork and hand-eye coordination, and is excellent for endurance. It is generally still regarded as an elite sport in South Africa, played mostly in affluent communities, and our aim is to take hockey to rural communities and give children who would otherwise never have been exposed to it, equal opportunity to play and learn.

The hockey programme has since 2009 expanded to Stanford and Hermanus and presently sees a mix of genders and all three races creating increased integration within the program.

At the Gansbaai Spaces for Sport field, our local community hockey group currently teaches hockey to fourdifferent age groups (age 1-6, age 7-10, age 11-15,16+),

We are proud to announce that we have players making regional and national teams.

Hamburg helps.

In 2014 the hockey program was expanded to three Hermanus communities where we have mixed girls and boys teams. three girls- and one boys’ team : Mount Pleasant, Zwehile, Hawston areas.

As of 2018, we also started a cooperation with the South African Hockey Association and the Western Province Hockey Union. That led to regular visits of coaches, support with equipment and first players taking part in training camps and games for regional teams.

In 2020 until the beginning of 2022, we had to stop our activities, due to the Covid crisis.
But April 2022, we moved the project to Cape Town and started to intensify our cooperation with the Western Province Hockey Union and Vila Viva of Viva con Agua. Two strong partners who now support us tremendously. After 10 successful years with our friends of the Grootbis Foundation, the new phase of our project will enable us to reach even more children with our passion for hockey.

Valentin Jussen

I recognized the emotional reward of this daily work and the learning effects of my work with different groups of children from an extremely different context. This significantly improved my intercultural and interpersonal understanding and taught me holding responsibility.

I was simply impressed by the skills every player on my team had. I came to South Africa with the impression that the kids have really low techniques and thought it would be best to start at the very beginning but could even start working on game tactics we used at the upcoming tournaments.

My time as a volunteer also caused a change in my mindset. It helped me remember again what Hockey truly is about: Having fun and engaging with your friends at the same time rather than competing all the time.

Then I met the hockey kids. A group of 20-30 crazy children, who will always have a special place in my heart. Always fun, loud and active, teaching me so much about their culture, thankfulness and appreciation for the littlest things in the world.
